What Is a NORAD ID?

A NORAD ID is a catalog number used to identify a tracked space object. It helps distinguish satellites with similar names or repeated launches.

A stable catalog identifier

Names can change or be reused, but catalog IDs give trackers a stable way to link TLE data, map markers and satellite detail pages.

Why it appears in SpaceTrack

SpaceTrack shows NORAD IDs so users can verify that a selected object, catalog record and pass prediction refer to the same spacecraft.

Useful for search

If you know the NORAD ID for a satellite, searching by that number is often more precise than searching by name.

Frequently asked questions

Is NORAD ID the same as a satellite name?

No. It is a numeric catalog identifier, while the name is a human-readable label.

Can two objects share a NORAD ID?

No. A catalog ID is meant to identify one tracked object.
